Viola Music Club by Viola is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial 1.0 Finland License. This means you can do anything you want with our music, just credit us and don't use it for commercial purposes (without paying us a lot o' money).
Donations
If you really really like what we do, but you don't want useless crap like t-shirts or cd's and can't make it to our shows, but still want to help us make music, you can just use Paypal to donate some money. This seriously is not why we do this, but since a lot of people have been asking whether or not we accept donations, why not... But we're not asking, we're humbly accepting, should someone want to contribute!
From now on everything we do will be free.
Everything we've made in the past is free as well.
Starting April 1st 2009, we'll be releasing 1 song each and every month on this site. At midnight on the 1st of the month. They'll all be in digital format only and completely free.
Please use the player on the right side of the page to stream our old stuff, or explore the albums to download either .zip-packages of entire albums or individual songs (click "Show tracks" from a given album).
That's it. We hope fans of physical records are not too disappointed. Those things just weren't making any more sense.
This way all the walls between us and you are down. No more waiting around. No more "promo period" or having to deal with distribution. Straight from our hearts to yours.

This is amazing! I just discovered Viola through Jamendo and simply can't believe that I have not found You earlier. I had only one day to listen to the tracks but 90% till now are just perfect for my ears. You're now in the top 5 free music artists that I know but taking the amount of albums into consideration You're number one for sure!

Thanks for your thanks! There's no way to donate at the moment. We've been thinking about whether or not we want to make it possible or not and whether "pushing" a donating option to people cheapens what we're trying to do, but then again, some people have been asking about this and it would probably be nice to offer the possibility. Stay tuned, a Paypal-button may appear on this site at some point.

En osaa arvioida, onko linjauksenne hyvä asia uranne kannalta, mutta ainakin yksi asia on varmaa: Tällä toimenpiteellä löysitte musiikillenne taas yhden uuden kuulijan. Aiemmin en ollut teistä kuullutkaan...
Luin päätöksestänne jakaa musiikkianne ilmaiseksi Digitodayn uutiskirjeestä, klikkasin uutisen auki ja löysin tieni sivuillenne. Sen jälkeen innostuinkin kuuntelemaan musiikkianne sivun reunassa olevan playerin kautta. Osoitteen lisäsin bookmarkseihin, ja varmasti tulen tänne jatkossakin.
Eli homma toimii ainakin tuolta osin.

En osaa itsekään sanoa onko linjauksemme hyvä asia, sillä emme ole vuosiin - jos koskaan - osanneet itsekään ajatella touhujamme uramme kannalta. Ohitimme kaupallisen huippumme vuoden 2004 tienoilla ja tämä homma ikävä kyllä pelaa sillä tavalla, että kun "momentum" on käytetty, on musiikin tekeminen pitkälti omaa hupia. Haluamme vain varmistaa, että kyseistä hupia on mahdollisimman helppoa ja miellyttävää jatkaa ja että ne, jotka siitä sattuvat kiinnostumaan, pääsevät tekemisiimme käsiksi mahdollisimman vaivatta.
Lupaamme toki jatkossakin tehdä niin hyvää musiikkia, kuin suinkin voimme ja toivottavasti sinäkin saat hyvän syyn pyörähtää tällä saitilla jatkossakin.

I couldn't find the information about the license. Are you sharing the songs under Creative Commons so people can share, use and remix the songs and not just listen to them?
We mean to have them under CC "Attribution Non-commercial" -license, it's just not stated anywhere yet. I keep forgetting to add the info to the necessary places... Will do it asap.
But for the record, they are CC, it's just not explicitly stated. We will also offer some stuff for free remixing at some point as zip-packages containing all the separate tracks.

Olen teidän musiikkianne seuraillut Tearcandy-albumin julkaisusta lähtien joka sattumalta eksyi käsiini (ja josta myös kirjoitin arvostelun erääseen nuortenlehteen, harmittaa vieläkin kun annoin liian vähän tähtiä levyllenne. Olisi todellakin pitänyt antaa täydet viisi kolmen sijaan :(

As far as remix-favorable goes, we actually have planned to drop some zip-packages of our older stuff for free download if people want to meddle with the stuff. Probably quite soon, actually.
Just an idea, but will you release some "album art" to go along with your new yet-to-be-released songs so us old farts can neurotically assemble our own CD cases in the safety of our own home?
Yeah, at least we're planning to do so. Obviously since we're more of the musician type of dudes than graphic artists and we don't want to bug our friends once per month to create something cool for us, the art will probably not be too spectacular. Just something simple to kinda give a visual context for the tracks.
But don't be too mad if the art-half of the monthly deliveries will be a let-down. We're doing our best to at least keep the musical side top-notch!

The cost of this site's hosting is 88 euros per year. If we can't pay for that from what we make by playing gigs, we should _seriously_ start reconsidering this whole thing.
We talked about a donate-button and didn't come to a definitive conclusion yet. I think it's just best that people can "donate" by supporting us by coming to the gigs, buying T-shirts and whatnot. We can seriously bring down all our costs to really close to zero, so I wouldn't raise money as an issue here.

How about Spotify and other services like it? Have you thought about making your music available there?
Yeah, sure. We're already available on Last.fm and I'll definitely do a contract with Spotify as soon as they respond to me. They have a bit of a rush there.
However, as a business model I feel Spotify can't bear it's weight, but I won't go deeper into that right now.

We've never made money in the past and I'm quite sure we won't be making any money now either. We're just getting rid of all costs associated with making music and continuing with making a zero balance.
